If I Started Instructional Design Again, I’d Learn These 3 Things First

In an age where AI can create content in seconds, the true value of instructional design lies elsewhere.

There has never been a better time to enter instructional design.

And paradoxically, there has never been a more confusing time.

Artificial intelligence can generate storyboards, write objectives, suggest assessments, and even create entire courses. Learning technologies continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace. New frameworks, tools, and methodologies appear almost weekly.

For newcomers, the field can feel overwhelming.

When I first encountered instructional design, I believed success would come from mastering authoring tools, learning theories, and course development processes.

I was wrong.

Looking back, there are three things I would prioritize if I had to start over today.

Not because they are trendy.

But because they have become timeless.

1. I Would Learn Performance Consulting Before Learning Course Development

One of the biggest misconceptions in learning and development is that every performance problem requires training.

It doesn’t.

And yet, many instructional designers begin their careers believing their primary responsibility is to create courses.

In reality, the most valuable instructional designers are not content creators.

They are problem solvers.

Before opening PowerPoint, Storyline, or any AI-powered tool, I would first learn to ask better questions:

  • What business problem are we trying to solve?
  • What should people do differently after this intervention?
  • Is this truly a knowledge gap, or is something else preventing performance?

Often, the issue isn’t a lack of knowledge.

It’s a lack of processes, resources, feedback, incentives, or leadership support.

No amount of training can solve the wrong problem.

As organizations increasingly demand measurable outcomes rather than course completion rates, instructional designers are evolving into performance consultants.

And that shift may be the profession’s greatest opportunity.

2. I Would Study Human Psychology More Than Learning Technology

Technology changes.

Human behavior changes slowly.

While tools and platforms continue to evolve, the principles that govern attention, motivation, memory, and behavior remain remarkably consistent.

People do not learn because information exists.

They learn when information becomes meaningful.

Understanding concepts such as:

  • Cognitive load
  • Retrieval practice
  • Spaced repetition
  • Motivation
  • Behavioral psychology
  • Storytelling
  • Habit formation

has far greater long-term value than mastering any particular software.

The truth is uncomfortable but important:

Most training programs fail not because they lack content.

They fail because they ignore how people actually learn.

As artificial intelligence democratizes content creation, understanding the science of human learning becomes a strategic advantage.

Technology can accelerate learning.

But psychology determines whether learning happens at all.

3. I Would Learn Business Before Learning Instructional Design

This may sound counterintuitive.

But instructional design is not ultimately about learning.

It is about performance.

And performance exists within a business context.

The most influential instructional designers I know understand:

  • Organizational goals
  • Business metrics
  • Customer expectations
  • Change management
  • Leadership priorities
  • Workforce capability

They speak the language of executives, not just educators.

Because senior leaders are rarely asking:

“How many courses did we build?”

They’re asking:

“Did performance improve?”

Instructional designers who understand business can connect learning initiatives to outcomes that matter.

And those who can demonstrate impact will increasingly shape the future of the profession.

The Future Belongs To Architects, Not Builders

For years, instructional design was viewed primarily as a content production discipline.

That era is ending.

Content has become abundant.

Artificial intelligence will make creating learning assets easier and faster than ever.

But abundance creates a new challenge:

Differentiation.

The instructional designers who thrive in the next decade won’t necessarily be the ones who create the most content.

They’ll be the ones who create the most value.

They will understand performance before content.

Psychology before technology.

Business before deliverables.

Because instructional design was never really about building courses.

It was always about enabling people to do something they couldn’t do before.

And in a world increasingly defined by automation, that may become one of the most human skills of all.

If I were beginning my instructional design journey again, I wouldn’t start with tools.

I would start with people.

Because tools will change.

Platforms will evolve.

Artificial intelligence will continue to reshape the profession.

But understanding human performance, behavior, and business impact will never go out of style.

And perhaps that’s the lesson many of us learn only after years of designing courses.

The future of instructional design doesn’t belong to course builders.

It belongs to capability architects.
